Moving to Wilmington, NC: What It's Really Like to Live Here
This is a question that so many locals get from people considering a move to Wilmington. And depending on who you ask, you will get different answers. Some say “don’t come, we’re full”. And honestly, you’ll probably hear that at least once after you arrive. Wilmington is growing fast, and it’s true that the local infrastructure has struggled to keep up – looking at you, roads. But that’s the tradeoff that comes with living in a community people actually want to move to. Those who are honest will tell you, Wilmington is a great place to live.
It’s a decent sized town with a small beach town feel. You have plenty to do but it still maintains the charm of a much smaller community. Big concerts on summer nights, friendly locals, multiple beaches only a short drive away, and more food choices than you will know what to do with. The weather is great – mild winters and mostly mild summers. If you can survive a few incredibly humid days every summer, you will be fine. Get a boat or make friends with someone who has one and you will be fine those days.
It is also one of the most welcoming places. A common joke here is that no one is actually from here. Almost everyone is a transplant. Some are from other parts of the Carolinas and decided it was time to move to the beach, others are from up north escaping the cold, and there’s plenty of people from the other side of the country who just wanted a new scene.
Being a college and beach town creates an interesting situation. The summer is busy with tourists but less students, but the rest of the year has students but less tourists. Some local’s favorite time of year is right after the spring semester ends and before the tourist rush. That sweet spot in late spring/early summer when its warm enough to be outside but quiet enough to enjoy it without a crowd.
On one of those quiet days, you might find yourself down at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. Just over the bridge and a fun place for everyone. With a retro beach-town vibe, this is a place you don’t want to miss. Featuring amusement rides, bars, restaurants, and an ocean view. And don’t forget to get yourself a Britt’s donut.
Back in the city, there are concerts all the time at the Live Oak Pavillion. This outdoor concert venue hosts some of the biggest names in the industry and you’re definitely going to have a fun night. After the show, walk downtown to more bars and nightlife than you can count.
When you feel like hitting the beach, don’t miss out on Wrightsville Beach. Enjoy the sand and hit the water with surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Or fish off the piers – Johnie Mercer’s Fishing Pier or Crystal Pier. Just make sure you get there early as parking fills up fast.

One thing most transplants in the area will tell you, they were “only planning to live here a couple years” but now they will never leave. So maybe don’t move here unless you’re ready to be stuck in a beautiful charming coastal town forever.
